Year 10 English Trip to Stratford-upon-Avon

Just prior to the May half-term break I had the absolute pleasure of taking a group of Year 10’s to Stratford-upon-Avon to spend the day immersing ourselves in the wealth of Shakespeare history found there and partaking in a spotlight workshop on his play-text, Romeo and Juliet. Below are accounts of the day from some of the students who joined us on the trip.

"When we arrived on Henley Street, the first building that came into view was The Shakespeare Centre, and then a timber-framed Tudor house, which we instinctively know was the Birthplace of Shakespeare. Before we were toured through the centre, though, we were allowed to explore the surrounding area for a while – some of the group, myself included, walked to the "New Place" building and garden, which we learned later was the house Shakespeare bought after amassing wealth from his ventures in theatre and poetry." – Ben Keates

"The next location was Shakespeare’s house, where he grew up with his family. In each room there was someone who told us about that room and answered any questions we had. Some floors in the house are still the same, one of the guides said. After we explored the house we watched a little performance where there was an actress playing Juliet and showed us one of her monologues." – Caitlin GK

"The final event of the day was the workshop on Romeo and Juliet. This was a presentation by some of the Shakespeare’s Birthplace trusts experts on the key aspects of one of the most famous tragedies of all time. The three presenters told us about how Shakespeare uses characterisation, context and about the origins of the play." – Sidharth Panicker

The students were an absolute delight to have on the trip and presented themselves in an exemplary manner; year 10 has certainly done Gosford Hill School proud!
