Year 8 Trip to Ypres, Belgium
By 3:00am on Friday 23rd March, everyone going on the Belgium trip was at school. We left school at 3:15am. It was quiet on the coach at first but once we had travelled for a few hours it was very noisy! We arrived at the Eurotunnel at 5:45am and by 7:50am had arrived in France. We then drove to Belgium.
The first place we went to was a cemetery in Langemark Poelkapelle, West Flanders. The graves were well kept and neatly lined up. After everyone had finished, we left to travel to our next destination. The second place we visited was Tyne Cot in Zonnebeke, West Flanders. We got there at 10:25am. Here we laid a poppy wreath. We held a minute of silence after laying the wreath, to show our respect for all the people that lost their lives to defend our country.
Then we went to the ‘In Flanders Fields Museum’ in Ypres. At the museum we were able to watch clips and research items that were used during the war. When we got there we were given a poppy bracelet. The bracelet had a microchip so that when we were looking at something, we could scan our bracelet and find out more.
Then we went to Menin Gate. It had thousands and thousands of names, all around every single wall. It had a great view and was very well cared for. Then we went to the Leonidas chocolate shop. It was organised with them so that we had a chocolate tester. We were then able to make our purchases.
The last stop was the trenches. They were extremely muddy but very fun. We were allowed to explore everything. Our journey home was tiring. It took the same amount of time as the journey to Belgium.
