Year 8 Sports Tour

On Wednesday 11th April, 57 Year 8 students and 6 members of staff returned from the first ever Gosford Hill School Football & Hockey Sports Tour to Paris. The trip lasted 5 days with the group departing on the 7th April and packed in a wide variety of enriching, exciting and memorable activities which all members of the tour thoroughly enjoyed. The action started on day one with the group enjoying a Bateux Parisiens boat cruise through the River Seine to capture the many wonderful sights that Paris has to offer, and we even found time to have a few snaps by the Eiffel Tower!

This was followed by the first round of fixtures against local French opposition, with the boys playing against SC Dugnay and the girls facing Racing St Germain. It was a wonderful experience for the students to play against foreign opposition on first class facilities and to top it all of the sun was shining brightly. Our opponents were fantastic hosts and the teams enjoyed socialising after their fixtures. They took very good care of us even providing post-match food and a hamper full of gifts for our school.

On the second day the group enjoyed a full day at Disneyland Paris and a meal at Planet Hollywood. The lack of voices on the coach on the way home showed just how much the students enjoyed that experience! Day 3 soon rolled around, and the students had the opportunity to experience a coaching session from a professional sports coach, this was swiftly followed by a very exciting guided tour of the very impressive Stade De France the national stadium of France.

Not finished yet though the group then proceeded to play their second round of fixtures with the boys playing FC Châtenay-Malabry and the girls playing regional hockey teams. Once again, our hosts were very welcoming, and the students participated brilliantly in exciting football and hockey games and the proceeded to socialise with their opponent’s post-game.

To round the day off the students had a pizza evening in a local restaurant. During the tour, we were fortunate to stay at CREPS IDF which is one of France’s national centres for the countries elite athletes and home of their National Centre for Hockey. The girls even got to use the National Centre for Hockey facilities, a really nice touch.

In conclusion, without a shadow of a doubt the trip was a resounding success and as expected our students were a huge credit to our school. The trip provided some memories of a life time and as trip leader ticked all of the boxes that I hoped it would by providing our students with an experience where they were able to develop physical, socially and emotionally.

I would like to personally thank all 57 students for their conduct throughout the trip as well as thanking Mr Goldring, Miss Barrie, Mr Gannon, Miss Curtis and Miss Clifton without whom the success of the trip would not have been possible. The 5 members of staff who accompanied me, went out of their way to enhance the experience for the students and I know that the students were hugely grateful for their contributions.

Well done everyone & thank you for making the trip so enjoyable.

Mr L. Smith, Teacher of PE & Trip Leader
