Sports News - 16/03/18

During the week beginning 5th March 2018, Gosford Hill School took part in four District Final Tournaments in both netball and hockey for Year 7, 8, 9 and 10. With the added pressure of sitting at the top of the league tables, remaining undefeated in Year 8 netball, Year 9 hockey, Year 10 hockey and holding second place for Year 7 netball, the girls were keen to uphold their reputation of being ‘the ones to beat’.

Following excellent teamwork, determination and skill, the Year 8 netball team and Year 10 hockey team brought home the first two shields for Gosford on Tuesday 6th March 2018. Both teams played to their strengths and continued to play that the top of their game, despite gaining an early lead. Player of the tournaments – Phoebe Pipkin, Tara Nickfarjam and Harriet Symes.

On Thursday 8th March 2018, it was the Year 9 hockey and the Year 7 netball teams’ turn to compete. Following a 2-2 draw in their first game versus Warriner, the girls were quick to point out areas for improvement and go out fighting for the win in their second game. Here, they soon took the lead resulting in a 4-0 win versus Blessed George Napier. Their winning streak continued and the girls’ hard work was rewarded with them bringing home the third shield of the week as District Final Tournament Winners. Player of the tournament: Jess Mallaghan for some excellent saves as Goal Keeper.

The Year 7 netball team attended their first netball District Finals Tournament this week. Having secured second place in the league they knew it was going to be tough competition as they were competing against only the top teams.

Suffering a shaky start and taking a little too long to settle into the game, BGN soon took the lead in their first game. The team managed to pull it back from 4-0 to a final score of 4-2 but unfortunately their efforts were not enough and they weren’t left with enough time to secure a draw.

Having lost their first match, the girls did not lose their spark and were determined to secure an overall third place in the tournament. Their final match saw them take to court versus The Bicester School where some excellent shooting from best player Ella Joyce and some strong interceptions from Fiona Baker and Lucy McGrath down the centre court secured them the win of 4-0.

This resulted in their girls finishing in third place, an achievement they should be extremely proud of.
