Year 8 Science Trip to the Department of Education at Oxford University

On the 26th of January, ten Year 8 students went to the Department of Education at Oxford University to explore electro-statics. The day was split into 3 activities:

  • Super Sparks
  • The Circus
  • Super Bowl Salad Spinners

During Super Sparks, we observed the effects of various materials on a Van de graph Generator. The Circus was where we went around a variety of stations to explore electro-statics. For example, one of the stations was where we had to find a way (using electro-statics) to stop pollution from escaping from factory chimneys. For Super Bowl Salad Spinners, we had to use a salad bowl and some metal (with sticky backs) to create a spinner that would make a ball spin round the bowl in a straight line. Our school managed to get ours working first time!

Mr Moss, our science teacher who took us, helped us out along the way and we thank him for the great opportunity he gave us.

At the end we all got a ruler, pencil and pen which said on it "The Ogden Trust, Making Physics Matter." Some students received googly-eyed furry monster things, but don’t get me started on them. Overall, it was a fun and challenging day for all of us and we learnt lots.
