Year 9 OBEA Construction Challenge

On Wednesday 22nd of November and Thursday 30th November from morning to the afternoon students in Gosford Hill School, who were able in the following subjects; DT, Maths, Business and Art, were invited to participate in a construction challenge. Within the challenge they had to compete against other schools (Wheatley Park School and Lord Williams). They travelled to Kingerlee Construction in Kidlington to attend the competition.

The students were given a wide range of activities, which corresponded with certain roles within their groups. Project managers decided the company name, the logo and the detail within the work. Architects had to read maps and carefully measure the size of the total area used. Mechanics had to consider the important factors that must be required within the building like water systems and heating systems. The electrician focused on making the mechanical parts work as well as electric through the whole building and the costs manager focused heavily on making sure the project is within budget plus health and safety. The Year 9’s received a task. This was to build a spectacular Formula One headquarters that had to include heating systems, electric around the building, framework etc. The students had to make presentations about the building materials, resources and how it could be built. This presentation was accomplished by visiting other garages. For example, the students visited the Ford garage Kidlington to get inspiration about ideas for the building and other infrastructure. The winning school would receive a cup with their school name engraved on it.

Overall, students achieved ideas on how construction based jobs function. This is a major success for the students as it gives them insight for their future careers and possible work experience ideas. Moreover, other skills were learned, this was how buildings are made, methods or other ideas used by a business to build, how different roles within the construction branch work and how the construction business works.
