German and History trip to Berlin

On the weekend of Friday 7th April, year 9 and 10 students who study history and German travelled to Berlin for a 4 day visit starting with a 16 hour coach journey, via the channel tunnel.

During our time in Berlin we visited many famous landmarks, such as the Brandenburg Gate, German Parliament, the TV tower, which had an amazing birds-eye view of the city of Berlin, and the Olympic Stadium. We also visited places with relevance to World War 2, a subject that history students have been learning about. These included a Jewish Museum, a former Stasi Prison and a memory walk of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Students of German enjoyed listening to and reading German throughout the trip not to mention the challenge of translating signs and quotes when quizzed by the tour guides. During free time we ordered Currywurst or ice-cream in German!

Somehow, within this very full-on schedule we managed to fit in some spare time to go bowling and shopping, both of which were a good way to relax with friends. All of these places came together to make this trip a thoroughly enjoyable one and I would strongly recommend it to other students in the future who have the opportunity to further their learning of German or history. My thanks, and I’m sure the thanks of others who went on this trip of course go to Mrs Norman, Mr Gannon, Mr Goldring and Miss Curtis, without whom the trip would not have been possible.
