Living Eggs Project

This week the living eggs project comes to a close. Nine chicks hatched out last week (7 boys and 2 girls), with some students being lucky enough to watch a chick hatch from an egg during their lessons. After spending some time in the incubator to keep warm and dry out, our chicks were transferred to a larger box with a heat lamp. The Year 7 project students dutifully turned up every day to observe the weights and heights of our chicks and watch their behaviour, while Year 11 students from EAHY were kept busy during the two weeks with cleaning the box out up to 3 times per day and feeding our fast growing chicks!

This week saw our chicks beginning the show instinctive behaviours such as pecking, scratching at the ground and preening. With all of them starting to develop proper feathers on the wings. The chicks showed rapid growth, with some gaining up to 12 grams per day in weight!

We say goodbye to our chickens today, when they will be collected by the project manager and rehomed to a free range farm in the local area. This was an excellent learning opportunity for our students, and we hope to commence the project again next year.
