On Friday 24th February, a group of Year 8’s and 9’s had the exciting opportunity to meet with Simon: an engineer who works for Young Engineers. Young Engineers is a company with a mission to educate young people in the sciences. We began the day off with an insightful talk about what it means to be an engineer.
Simon explained to us that engineers are present in every field of work, and the skills that they have are vital to progress in any job. Using our new knowledge, we were able to design a windmill which could create enough energy to lift a weight. Then, we debated the type of power source Sweden, USA and UK would be the most effective. We condensed our ideas into a thirty second pitch to another group. Finally, we created a car that we raced with the other groups and recorded the results on a scatter diagram.
Everyone really enjoyed their time learning about engineers from Simon and came out of the lesson with a better understanding of - and a newfound excitement for – the sciences.
