Languages Trip Report

Last week a small group of Modern Foreign Languages students from Years 11-13, including myself, were given the opportunity to visit the University of Oxford’s Department of Education. The purpose of the day was to develop our understanding and knowledge of our chosen languages as well as to give students an insight into the possibility of studying a language further at university. When we arrived we were separated into several groups which were decided by our year group and the language that we are currently studying. This allowed us to interact and communicate with students from other schools in Oxfordshire who are at a similar level in terms of fluency and skill.

I was joined by three other A2 German students who noticeably shared my enthusiasm and passion for the language. Throughout the day we took part in various quizzes about Austria, strengthened our listening and speaking abilities through group discussions and each prepared and conducted a short presentation about energy, relevant to the A2 topic of environment. Activities which were provided to other year groups included vocabulary revision, listening exercises and general speaking practice specifically focused on GCSE and AS topics, for example, music.

The trip was an extremely enjoyable and effective experience for all students who attended the day and I personally gained a great amount of self-confidence, particularly in speaking, through the activities offered.

Emily Robinson - Y13 Student

Quotes from other students on the trip:
“The trip to Oxford University really helped me to think about pronunciation when speaking.”
“It was good to speak French with linguists from all over Oxfordshire. The content was good and it has definitely pushed me to make sure I get the grades I need to continue with French at A Level.”
“I enjoyed learning more about French culture.”
“I found it interesting to talk to A Level students in German, it pushed me to try hard.”
“The teachers were really supportive.”
“We learnt about recent History in Germany, in German!”

The students worked very hard on the day and despite being out of their comfort zones at times they took a great deal away from the visit.
