Sunday 23 April 2017.
A small group of Year 11 students were invited to join students from local schools at an evening conference ‘Is Oxbridge for me?’ at St Helen & St Katharine School, Abingdon. A really interesting Keynote speech ‘ Is Oxbridge for me?’ was given by a Dr Eleanor Parker, Student Recruitment Officer and Lecturer in Italian, Oxford University was followed by three seminars. These seminars covered the selection process for Oxford & Cambridge Universities, the interview and a current student panel Q&A. All three seminars gave our students lots of useful points to consider whether or not they ultimately decide to apply when they are in the Sixth Form.
One of the points raised showed students how they should improve what they do in addition to subject lessons to demonstrate their interest in a particular subject, (super-curricular activities). Not only did this include the obvious reading around a subject but furthering their skills to discuss and constructively argue their point of view as well as being able to listen and respond to the point of view of others.
Several sites were recommended to students for exploring around their chosen subjects including a new Oxford University site http://torch.ox.ac.uk/oxplore-home-big-questions and a Mathematics site https://nrich.maths.org.
