Year 9 and 10 trip to Worth Down Military Base

On Wednesday 10th March a small selection of Year 9 and 10 GCSE students visited Worth Down, Military Base in Winchester. Upon arrival we had a guided tour of the training base, which trains military chefs from all areas of the Armed Forces. We were shown around by Jules Rann – a senior member of the base management team who is a fully trained chef and soldier. Students had the chance to make bread with trained chefs, learn what military life is like and what qualifications they could gain. Students also had a question and answer session with various members of the catering establishments such as head chefs and stewards in the Royal Navy.

After the guided tour students started to be braver and asked more questions. We all went outside in the mud and rain (a true hands on experience) and students were guided around to see how military food is prepared and cooked. They also had the chance to look and see ration packs and were all given a free lunch cooked from rations. Students went for the safe option of the handmade pizzas cooked on the open fire pit. Students also had the opportunity to look at recruitment information and interact with the trained solders on site.

Some quotes from students include:
‘We liked how friendly the staff were’ and ‘I can’t believe this is ration food because it’s so nice’.

I would like to thank the students on the day for their impeccable behaviour and to thank the staff at Worth Down for this opportunity.
