The Year 10 football team have progressed to the final of the national competition. The team travelled to Slough and beat St Bernard’s Grammar School. The two teams met last year and St Bernard’s won 5–4. The game was played at the school with officials appointed by the English Schools Association.
Gosford started the game playing excellent football, the midfield worked tirelessly against St Bernard’s who opted to play 5 in midfield. Gosford players moved the ball quickly and kept finding space. Neat build up play was rewarded after 5 minutes with a goal from Piers Walton. Gosford continued to dominate the play for the majority of the first half and were rewarded before half time with a second goal from Jonah Clarke. St Bernard’s continued playing one up front but dominated the start of the second half. Nerves began to settle and Gosford began switching the play making the home team work hard off of the ball. As the game progressed St Bernard’s players started to suffer cramp and some of their more dangerous players were substituted. Gosford continued to create a huge number of clear cut chances. Finally, Joey Cowlishaw settled the game with the third goal after Piers Walton laid the ball off.
To reach the final of a national competition is a fantastic achievement and the conduct of the players throughout the game and at the final whistle was exemplary.
