Billy Elliot Trip – Thursday 22nd October 2009
|
|
Forty four Performing Arts and A level students from across years 9 to 13 went to the Princess Theatre, Victoria, London to see the fantastic musical Billy Elliot. A look back at life in the north of England in the 1980’s at the time of the national miners strike. The musical was gritty, original and full of humour. The young lead character playing Billy Elliot was amazing, displaying his many talents including; singing, tap dancing, ballet, gymnastics, even flying on a trapeze wire all performed to the highest standard. The scenery was cleverly designed to be used in many different ways with an amazing revolving set which rose out of the stage to become the kitchen and bedroom of the house had a real impact on the audience. Memorable highlights from the show included the duet of Billy and his best friend Michael with the dancing dresses and the miners versus the police in the riot scene. Both were cleverly choreographed. The show fulfilled its brilliant reviews and judging by our students’ enthusiastic response to the show I hope, will continue to inspire them in their own studies. A wonderful evening and our students were a credit to the school with their immaculate behaviour throughout.

'Safe Drive, Stay Alive'
|
On Tuesday November 4th all Year 13 students attended the annual hard-hitting road safety campaign aimed at young drivers and passengers called ‘Safe drive, Stay alive’. This initiative run by Thames Valley Police in association with the other emergency services is designed to drive home the dangers of driving.
This is the third year the graphic show has been staged in the County and it always leaves a lasting impression with audiences. While many find it ‘haunting’ it is undoubtedly compulsive viewing and has become an established part of Gosford Hill schools’ programme.
Students experience a chilling ride as a re-enactment of a crash involving a group of young people is shown on film.
The film is interspersed with talks from people affected by such incidents - emergency services, victims and the bereaved – who ‘step out’ of the film to speak openly about their feelings, experiences and life afterwards.
The ‘Safe Drive’ initiative aims to reduce the number of road deaths and accidents and increase this age group's awareness of the dangers that exist on our roads. It succeeds admirably in this aim.

RED DRIVING SCHOOL
|
On Thursday 16 October Andy Milne from the Red Driving School gave a talk to the Year 12 on basic driving skills. Andy’s presentation focussed on incidents and facts concerning novice drivers (those who have just passed their test). The emphasis was very much on gaining driving experience after the test and also the responsibility that a driver has towards his/her own safety and the safety of others. It was a most powerful and thought provoking presentation. After the presentation some students had the opportunity to try out the driving simulator and test their own skills as a driver.

Stratfield Brake Environmental Analysis
|
On Tuesday 14th October, eighteen year 11 students ventured down to Stratfield Brake to carry out an environmental analysis. After a short pitstop for sustenance the team of Scientists arrived at the ponds. The brief rainfall didn’t dampen spirits and the groups persevered with their investigation. After using qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative analysis it was concluded that the pond had a pH of 6.9. Indicator species that were identified included nematodes, duckweed, water snails, cypris, water louse and fresh water shrimps. Obviously Stratfield Brake is a hotspot for a variety of local wildlife! The pooters yielded further indicators including spiders, woodlice and gnats. The ultimate find however was the beautiful dragonflies! All the students had a fantastic time, even whilst wearing Wellington boots!

Languages Week 2008
|
The MFL department organised a Languages Week to celebrate the diversity of languages being spoken in the school and around the world. This was in conjunction with European Day of Languages which was on Friday 26th September. Multilingual signs were put up all around the school and tutor groups tackled tricky quiz questions every morning.
Pupils were involved in Spellathons in French, German and Spanish and won valuable credits towards their respective Houses. Special praise goes towards these pupils who came top in their Key Stage spellathon: Susanna House (TSHY), Andreea Dumistriscu (TSWS), Holly Smith (WTME), Karen Fung (WRFM), Anna Proffitt (TSWS) and Jessica Arthur (EERE). Other events included International Food Tasting which was very well attended by the hungry masses as well as the cultured food lovers. Food came from Poland, Portugal, China, France, Germany and Spain. Many thanks to Mrs Gonzalez- Brew who made delicious tortillas!
The week ended in Speed Language Learning where pupils had the opportunity to learn up to twenty different languages. Pupils were given two minutes to sample a language and then move onto the next Speed Language teacher. Some of the languages on offer included Kswahili, Punjabi, Gujurati, Polish, Croatian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese, Korean and Romanian. It was an amazing sight to see so many involved in peer teaching and even better were the variety of sounds produced from all the languages. Well done to everyone who got involved and made it such a successful and memorable week!

Summer School 2008
|
Ninety-eight students took part in a very successful Summer school. In addition to subjects such as Maths, English, and History, students had the opportunity to take part in a variety of creative subjects, including dance, drama, music and circus skills. The highlight of the week was a visit to Jardines Bowling Alley, which was followed-up with some Maths skills based on their bowling scores. Our canteen was open each day for snacks and for lunch and this really helped the students to feel that they were truly members of our school.
Quotations from some of our students:
“At Summer School we learnt our way round school, and learnt what Secondary school lessons are like. And it was really run going bowling with my friends and nice to meet lots of new friends.”- Rachel E Barrett 7 TJKK
“The best thing about Summer School getting a head start of knowing my way around the school. Also baking the fairy cakes….mmmm, yummy!” Tori McClean 7EIWB
“I really liked going bowling. I got the first strike! I also made lots of new friends”.
Alex Christodoulou 7CDBD
“I really liked the cooking at Summer School, when we made fairy cakes, it was lots of fun. I really enjoyed all Summer School too!” Leah Court 7CLKI
“The best thing about Summer School was bowling. I really enjoyed getting to know the teachers as well”. Celia Tezel 7ERJS
“I enjoyed Summer School a lot. The best bit about Summer School was doing lots of different lessons.” Lauren Cook, 7 CASR.

The PE department at Gosford Hill School wish to make changes to the current PE kit worn at school. Former Teachers Vs Present Teachers Cricket Match - Friday 18th 2008
|

The annual cricket match between former teachers at Gosford Hill School (called All-stars) and the current members of staff (called Young guns) was held at Eynsham cricket ground last Friday 18th July. In a tense and exciting finish the ‘oldies’ prevailed for the third year running to win by 3 runs. On a cloudy afternoon Captain of the Classic All –star team Mr Catling elected to bat first while Mr Hollis took his group of Young Guns into the field.
Good bowling form Mr Hollis, Mr Cathcart and Mr Brock restricted the All Stars to just 95 all out. Top scorers for the All stars were former PE teacher from 1980 Paul Bellis with 30 and former drama teacher Martin Ward who chipped in with a useful 21. Other teachers from yesteryear were Mr Grinham (PE), Mr Atkinson (Geog), Mr Jarratt (PE), Mr Durrant (Science), Mr King (Maths), Mr Dobson (Maths) and Mr Shaw.
In reply the All-stars reduced the Young guns to 15-4 but fine batting from Mr Bullock got the current teachers back on track. However, he continually lost partners at the other end including Mr Cathcart to a first ball duck before Mr Hollis launched a fine last wicket partnership with Mr Bullock to take the Young Guns to the brink of their first ever victory. However, with plenty of overs remaining and just 3 runs required to win the rearguard action ended when Mr Hollis perished and the Classic All-Stars maintained their unbeaten record.
Both teams then enjoyed a wonderful evening of reminiscing and food and drink in a local hostelry with the customary fines. Many thanks to Mr Shaw, who is President of Eynsham Cricket Club, for allowing the school to use the facilities.

Students visit Lords
|
Thirty three cricketers from Years 7 to 10 travelled to the home of cricket at Lords London to watch the first day of the eagerly anticipated first test match between England and South Africa.
After the monsoon like rain on the day before hopes were not high that a full days play would be witnessed but Thursday dawned bright and clear and the match started on time and was uninterrupted by the weather. The party arrived well before play was due to start which enabled the boys to watch the comprehensive warm up on the playing field and nursery ground. This enabled many to gain numerous exclusive autographs as players passed from one area to another at close quarters. Among the signatures gained were Paul Collingwood, Monty Panesar, Luke Wright, Tim Ambrose, Ryan Sidebottom and some even gained the prize signature of Kevin Pieterson! Also old timers from the TV commentary team like David Lloyd, Mike Gatting and Ian Botham were added to the list.
South Africa won the toss and after a slow start England managed to get to lunch without losing wicket with Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook digging in against the much vaunted South African pace attack. Fortunately the only rain of the day came over the lunch period where light drizzle threatened to ruin Mr Catling’s and Mr Cathcart’s picnic lunch on the on the nursery ground!!
After lunch the South African’s struck back taking three wickets in quick succession for just 3 runs but Ian Bell and Kevin Pieterson steadied the ship with a stunning 192 run partnership to see England close on 309-3. Highlight of the day was seeing Pieterson score his hundred and the day finished with Bell not out 75 and Pieterson on 104 with England well placed in the match.
A tired but well satisfied party reached home at about 8pm armed with cricket bats, balls, shirts and other memorabilia after a fantastic day at the home of cricket.

Study day at Harcourt Arboretum.
|
On Monday 7th of July, Miss Kinrade and Mr O’Brien took the biology and human biology students to Harcourt Arboretum to study ecology in more depth. After the eventful journey on the way there, we finally arrived. Although the weather was not brilliant, we got started straight away. Firstly, we talked about how the gardeners at the Arboretum looked after the “Trees of the World” and how the area was kept safe for the public. This included mowing the grass, cutting back overhanging and dead branches and fencing off certain trees. We then moved on and got stuck into some field work. The whole group learned how to put a point frame together and how to use them. As well as this, we learned in which situations it was best to use the point frames and when it would be best to use the quadrats.
To start off with we entered the coppice where Silver Birch, Hazel and Sweet Chestnut trees were growing. Before doing some sampling and calculating the index of diversity here, we learned about the harvesting techniques used in this area. A quarter of the trees are harvested here every year. For the trees that have been cut down, they are left to grow back but many changes take place to them. For example the trees grow back with more trunks and become less branched. This method of harvesting however is sustainable although deer and munkjacks are a problem as they like to feed on the new shoots that re growing. Further along the coppice, we learned about a different harvesting technique called Pollarding. Instead of cutting the trees low down where deer and other animals can eat new shoots, the tree is harvested further up. This then allows the land to be used for not only tree farming but for grazing animals as well without having to worry about them eating new shoots.

Mrs McGarrick and six Year 12 students (Nick Adsett, Cassie Arnold, Hatty Barrett, Susanna Edmonds, Joe Meadham and Katherine Soroya) attended this event in the historic Taylorian Institute which houses the Modern Languages Faculty of Oxford University. Our students took part in workshops organised by the Goethe Institut and Nelson Thornes publishers, were led on a guided tour of Oxford conducted entirely in French or German and learnt to speak some Mandarin. The aims of the day were to emphasise the importance of speaking another language and to make students aware of how advantageous this is in the job market today. Our students took part in all the activities with enthusiasm and demonstrated that students at GHS are mature and open minded!

The Kidlington Day Centre Mural
|
An exciting Community Art Project came together during Activities Week (Mon 23rd to Friday 27th June) between Gosford Hill School and the Kidlington Day Centre. This involved AS Level Art students working together before hand to think of ideas for a mural. Hattie Barrett created and produced the final design, and subsequently led a talented team of Year 12 students to complete the painting.
The team included: -
April Jacobs, Jason Lee, Suki Trowles, Charlotte Connelly, Huw Jenkins, Katie Porsch and Abi Payne.
Liz Pinner, Assistant Manager and the staff at the Day Centre really appreciated their hard work and were delighted with the final painting. They were great ambassadors for the Sixth form at Gosford Hill School.
Well done.

Learning 2 Learn
|
During Activities Week, years 8 & 9 explored the learning to learn programme. On Tuesday 24th & Thursday 26th July 2008 students created 3D ‘Junk’ models of the brain from recycled materials. The students had only 1.5 hours to plan & create some wonderfully colourful & informative models (along with a lot of mess!!!!).
In the pictures below you can see some of the most ingenious & resourceful creations from Miss Duncanson & Mrs Richmond’s groups. Enjoy.

Year 13 Leaver’s Ball Friday 20 June.
|
This year the Ball was held at the Four Pillars Hotel in Witney.
With the weather set fair over 200 guests arrived in various modes of transport, including the usual stretch limo, to have their photographs taken in the film premier style. However some staff decided a parked rusty white van had some sort of appeal (see photos). Although no red carpet, there was an archway of balloons to pose underneath on the way into the venue.
Inside the table decoration was burgundy and white. A buffet of hot and cold food which included cold meat, salmon, lasagne, chicken casserole with plenty of veggies and salad. After the food there was an excellent disco and of course time to take a leisurely drink outside as the sun went down.
The evening was extremely pleasant thanks to the good company of all the students and the teachers. I would also like to say a special thanks to the ball committee of Lewis Harrison, Rachel Coates, Matthew Brooks and Adam Kelly who managed to put together a fantastic evening. We look forward to seeing year 13 again on results day.
